5 Films We're Dying To See at soho horror fest 2024

Soho Horror Film Festival returns with its mammoth 2024 hybrid edition. Spread over two consecutive weekends and boasting two distinct film programmes: the festival returns to the Whirled Cinema, Brixton for its 6th in-person event, followed by a 4 day long online home-invasion of unique film screenings and special events. Boasting over 80 films, spanning from 17 countries, this year, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Blair Witch Project, the festival will be running a found-footage strand as well as a live presentation of penis trauma in cinema by the podcast Gore Things.

Whilst we here at What A Scream are practically foaming at the mouth like a half-starved zombie for the incredible lineup at this year's Soho and Sohome Horror Film Festival, here are five movies we are particularly excited to see:

STRANGE HARVEST: OCCULT MURDER IN THE INLAND EMPIRE directed by Stuart Ortiz of Grave Encounters (2011) fame, plays out like a true crime documentary that follows police detectives who are hot on the trail of an infamous serial killer called Mr Shiny.

Having its UK premiere at Soho Horror Festival is Koji Shiraishi's HOUSE OF SAYURI. Combining both the creepy haunted house vibes that J-Horror is infamous for, and comedic sensibility, HOUSE OF SAYURI follows a family who move into an abode haunted by the vengeful spirit of a murdered girl.

Screening on the Saturday of the festival is Can Evrenol's SAYARA, an anti-revenge tale that sees the sister of a murdered woman take on her politically connected killers. A dark and gory exploration of the rising numbers of femicide faced by women across the globe.

With its European premiere happening at this years fest, BIRTHRITE directed by Ross Partridge is a queer maternity centric horror in which a pregnant woman and her girlfriend leave the city to take on her aunt's country house which was left to her in a will. Once there however, the couple soon get caught up in a situation which threatens the life of their unborn child.

Nicolas and Luciano Onetti bring the grim and depraved 1978 to Soho Horror Fest with their depiction of Argentina under military dictatorship as a group of torturers break into a house and kidnap a group of youngsters to violently interrogate them in a detention centre, however not everything goes according to plan.

The Soho Horror Film Festival will run from 22nd-24th November at the Whirled Cinema in Brixton, London. The online Sohome Horror Film Festival will run from 28th November to the 1st December.
