The Friday of the festival sees the international premiere of Izzy Lee’s House of Ashes. Mia is a woman under house arrest and at the same time is coming to terms with the mysterious death of her husband. Despite not being able to leave her house, Mia realises her life is in danger when she contends with terrifying phenomena. The documentary The Last Sacrifice will follow from director Rupert Russell with its UK premiere, exploring the shocking real-life witchcraft killing of Charles Walton in 1945 which would go on to inspire the 1973 British folk-horror classic The Wicker Man. The world premiere of By The Throat, directed by David Luke Rees, sees Patricia Allison star as Lizzy, a newly employed housekeeper hoping for distraction from a near fatal tragedy. When Lizzy begins to experience hallucinations and nightmares, she realises evil outside forces may be at work. Taking FrightFest audiences into Friday evening will be the world premiere of alien invasion horror The Doom Busters, directed by Jack Lawrence McHenry, which depicts a bored Home Guard, Arthur, in 1940s Britain who wishes for the adventure of the frontline in the impending war. However, the mantra be careful what you wish for comes into play when an intergalactic invader crashes and Arthur must fight for the fate of the world. Closing Friday is the European premiere of Pedro Kos’ In Our Blood, which sees documentary filmmaker Emily attempt to reconcile with the ghosts of her past by attempting contact with her addict mother.

Saturday morning sees the Brazilian psychological horror A Mother’s Embrace make its UK premiere. Directed by Cristian Ponce, the film portrays emergency services worker Ana and her team attempt to help vacate an old people’s home amongst impending floods, but find much more sinister encounters within the walls of the abode. Taking audiences through a never-before-seen look at the making of the ninth film in the Friday the 13th franchise is documentary Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday from director Michael Flesher before The American Backyard brings audiences into the evening. Directed by cult shocker Pupi Avati, this thriller portrays a troubled man who moves next door to the object of his affections, who in turn has mysteriously disappeared. Paul Boyd’s Scared To Death starring horror icon Lin Shaye sees a horror film production team go in search of authenticity by holding a séance in an abandoned children’s home. The unsuspecting crew soon fall victim to not only the ghosts of the children, but also to something much more sinister.
